The Animal Heart Poetry Chapbook Contest

– 5 print copies of their book
– a feature in our literary journal, FERAL: A Journal of Poetry and Art
Two runners up will receive:
– a copy of the winning book
– a feature in our literary journal, FERAL: A Journal of Poetry and Art
– a print copy of the issue of FERAL in which their feature appears
What we’re looking for:
There’s no theme – write what speaks to you, and comes from the innermost depths of your soul. What sparks your intensity, your passion, your curiosity, your anger. Tell us about it. We’re looking for 25-40 poems that fit tightly together. If some of the poems in the collection have been previously published that’s okay, but the collection as a whole needs to be unpublished.
Please note that at the core of both FERAL and Animal Heart press is love. Although we wish it didn’t need to be said, we will not accept any work that is racist, homophobic, sexist or discriminatory. We are committed to publishing a variety of new, emerging and established voices. Further, we are committed to inclusion and equity in publishing. We highly encourage submissions from underrepresented voices including, but not limited to, women poets, poets of color, LGBTQ poets, and neurodivergent poets. International submissions are welcome, but we are only considering work in English at this time; no translations.
How to enter:
Format your file in Garamond font, size 12, single line spacing. (Be nice to our judges’ eyes!) Please make sure there’s no identifying information in your submission file – name your file with the title of your book.
The competition has a USD$5 entry fee, payable via PayPal. If you’d like to donate an entry fee for a writer for whom the entry fee might be prohibitive, we (and they) would be most grateful. Just add an extra fee to your cart and drop us an email at submissions[DOT]animalheartpress[AT]gmail[DOT]com. We’ll make sure it goes to the right place.
Once you’ve paid the fee, email your entry to submissions[DOT]animalheartpress[AT]gmail[DOT]com. Send your file and your PayPal receipt as attachments to the email, with a subject line ‘CHAPBOOK CONTEST’. In your email, tell us a little about you. (We’re humans. We like humans.)
The submission window for the competition is January 1, 2021 – February 28, 2021. All entrants will be notified and the winners announced on April 1, 2021. Simultaneous submissions are fine, but if you need to withdraw please notify us via email as soon as possible. Entry fees will not be refunded. You can submit as many manuscripts as you wish, but you’ll need to pay an entry fee for each manuscript.
